History of St Peter's Church PDF Print E-mail

The construction of St. Peters Church in Warrenpoint began in 1834 on a site in Great Georges Street donated by a Protestant Gentleman, Mr. James T. Halyday. The corner stone of the church was laid by Bishop Blake on 29th June 1834.

However due to funds in the parish being scarce it was not until seven years later that the church was officially opened. The dedication ceremony took place on 15th August 1841 in the presence of, it is said, twenty thousand. This large attendance was mainly due to the famous Fr. Theobald Matthew, the Apostle of Temperance, who preached the sermon.

But by 1875 enough funds had been raised and the spire, which is a familiar landmark in Warrenpoint today, was erected. This spire is 140 feet high with a large metal cross on the top. Very much upgraded from the original building over the years and so today St. Peters Church is a landmark in Warrenpoint and has seen the town grow from its small beginnings with a population of about 1000 to the present day population of more than 10,000.
